Target Heart Rate Calculator

Curious about the ideal heart rate you should have during your workout to burn the most calories without tiring out too quickly?

Use this guide to determine your resting heart rate (RHR), calculate your target heart rate (THR) zone and learn to use it in your excercise routine to confirm you are excercising within an optimal level (however, it's important to remember formulas aren't always 100% accurate and some medications can affect your heart rate. Be sure to check with your physician about monitoring your exercise intensity if you are taking any medications).

Your first step is to find your resting heart rate (RHR), a measure of your basic fitness level.

First thing in the morning before getting out of bed, take your pulse for 1 full minute and count each heart beat. This is your beats per minute. For a more accurate measurement average your pulse over 3 mornings.

A normal RHR for adults is between 60-100. Frequent exercisers and athletes may have lower RHR (the lower your rate, the more fit you are).

If your RHR is over 100, you should call your doctor to get checked out.
